THE BEETLE GOES TO
THE STARTING LINE
Wolfsburg, 21 October 2011 - When the Beetle and New
Beetle are counted together, the ‘round’ Volkswagens
are among the world’s most successful cars ever!
Today, the third generation of the Volkswagen icon
goes to the starting line in Germany: The Beetle.
Two additional engines are now also available in the
completely redesigned two-door car. In addition to
the base engine, the 1.2 TSI (77 kW/105 PS) and the
top 2.0 TSI (147 kW/200 PS) model, the 1.4 TSI (118
kW/160 PS) and the 1.6 TDI (77 kW/105 PS) are new to
the programme.
The Beetle – presented early this year in a
simultaneous reveal in New York, Berlin and Shanghai
– transfers the visual Beetle concept to
contemporary times: with its characteristic flared
wings, clean lines of its rear lights, curvature of
its bonnet and side or door sills. Inside, the
nostalgic glove box in body colour is reminiscent of
the era of the original Beetle. Along with the base
version, the Beetle is also available in the
"Design" and "Sport" equipment lines. Offered in the
latter is the 2.0l TSI engine, which can accelerate
the Beetle Sport from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds.
The most fuel-efficient engine for the European
market – the 1.6 TDI with 105 PS – consumes just 4.3
l/100 km.
The Beetle will first be introduced in the Canada,
USA and Germany, and in upcoming weeks in most
neighbouring European countries. At a base price of
16,950 euros, the Beetle – also available with a
Käfer, Vocho or Maggiolino badge in this model –
costs about 1,750 euros less than the comparable
previous model.
