STEP 1. STEP 2.

What you see here is the stock factory head unit.

Remove factory head unit with special tools (you can find them at any high audio shop or dealer).  Disconnect 3 wire harnesses and antennae.
STEP 3. STEP 4.

Remove storage box above radio.

Pull the wires out.
STEP 5. STEP 6.

Figure out where to cram the wires.

Connect the custom wire harness and cram wires wherever they can fit (I tucked mine under the unit, behind the HVAC controls).  Connect antennae power amplifier and tuck in back left.

UPDATE: MKIV GOLF/JETTA COLOUR CODING AFTERMARKET WIRES

* Red with white stripe = Continuous power from battery whether key in ignition or not power is always on.

* Brown = Ground.

* Yellow with I think red stripe no worries it's the only yellow wire in the cluster = accessory wire.
STEP 7. STEP 8.

Install the new radio sleeve, push metal pins out from sides to secure into place.  Finally pull wires out through the sleeve to connect to new radio.

Connect wire harness and antennae adapter to new radio, slide radio into sleeve and push back until it "clicks".
STEP 9. STEP 10.

Install storage box above radio then install black plastic casing around edge of radio.

Turn car on and lets find out if the new head unit works.

Close up of the custom wiring harness from crutchfield.com and the antennae booster (I soldered the wires together and used heat-shrink tubing to seal the exposed wires.
