Disconnect the light bulbs, leaving the bulbs
in the light housing so you don't lose them
for future use. Pull your grille off pressing
down from the top and pulling up and out on
the clips. Your grille should pop right out.
There are four bolts per light. Unbolt those
bad boys and carefully take out the lights. |

Next, you got to cut out the radiator support
on the left side of the radiator (as seen
above). There is a seam to follow so just cut
along the bend. This is necessary because the
light will not fit without this piece being
cut away. Cover your paint!!! The metal chips
and dust are hot and will burn your finish. |

Then you have to cut the support for the top
outside corner of both lights (as seen above).
A small straight cut is all that is needed.
Then take a pair of vise-grips and bend them
out straight about 10 degrees away from being
totally horizontal. |

Then, you need to cut the top inside corner
off of the left light. (The side where you cut
the radiator support) The above picture is of
the back view of the light. You also need to
cut the little pegs off of both lights. They
are located on the supports of the lights.
Now is a good time to test fit the lights.
Make sure they fit without any rubbing or
impediments. |

Next, you need to either buy the German wiring
harness adaptor from VW Sport USA (25-45$) or
make them yourself. Being that I chose the
latter, here is how you do it. Go to a stereo
shop and buy 8 negative speaker wire
connections. The gold kind are the best
because they won't corrode if water gets to
them. Go buy 4 lengths of 5 foot wire. 22 or
18 gauge thickness is best. Cut each of these
in half. Then proceed to connect the
connections to one end of each wire.
You should now have 8 lengths of 2 1/2 foot
wire with connections on one end of each wire.
4 wires for each light. Label each wire; high,
low, ground, and parking. Grab a test light
and test the light bulb hookup. Label these
with a piece of waterproof tape or some tape
you can write on. It should read from left to
right on the hookup; high, low, ground.
THIS IS HOW IT WAS ON MY CAR. YOU SHOULD TEST
THIS OUT TO MAKE SURE!!!
You now have a choice. Do you want your
auxiliary light that came with the MKIV lights
to be steady or blink when you turn. Pull out
the appropriate light on your car and test for
either the turn signal or parking light and
then label the wire. |
DISCONNECT YOUR BATTERY NOW!!!
With wire strippers, tap into the factory
wiring. Connect the appropriate wires and then
get ready to connect them to the lights. If
you look at the back of the lights, you will
see a four prong harness. It should be from
top left clockwise; ground, high, parking,
low. Check this out to be sure but that is
what is was for mine. Connect the wires,
making sure they speaker connections aren't
touching. I wrapped mine with electrical tape.
It should be a tight fit. Don't force the
connections. If need be, pry them bigger with
the tip of your test light.
After making the connections, double check
your connections and wiring. No bare wires? No
wires connecting? Are the connections right?
Check one more time. Close your eyes and have
a fire extinguisher handy and connect your
battery. After turning off your car alarm that
will go off, check the lights. Driving lights
are outside, high beams are inside. Check your
turn signals or parking lights. No smoke?
Good, the hardest part is over. |

This is when everything gets all
jimmy-riggish. You need to make some
extensions to make the lights fit correctly.
VW SPORT USA makes them and if you ask them
nicely, they will make them for you too.
Special thanks goes out to them for giving me
a set. You can make them by getting thick fuel
pump hose and cutting two 1" lengths and
2 half inch lengths.
Each corner of the lights needs different
mounting instructions. The top outside mounts
need a 1" bolt and nut to connect.
Tighten these all the way up. The top inside
mounts need a 1" self-tapping screw. It
should go like this; screw, washer, light
mount, hose, into the car body just below the
factory bolt hole. The bottom inside mounts
are not used at all. The bottom outside mounts
go like this; 1 1/2" bolt, washer, light
mount, 1" hose, through the car body
hole, washer, nut.
If you mount them right, there will be no gap.
The lights actually fit real nice after
everything is done right. Phewwwwwwww! That
nightmare is over. Take a break and wait until
dark. You didn't expect them to be aligned did
you? |

At night, you need to adjust the lights so you
don't blind people or light up the sidewalks.
The lights should overlap about twenty feet
from the front of the car. Tightening up the
bottom screw will bring the lights up.
Tightening the outer mounts spread the lights
out. Tightening the inner mounts spreads the
lights in.
Lastly, carefully snap your grille back in,
being careful not to break off the plastic
clips. There you have it! MKIII with MKIV
lights!!! |
